Linux 10000 ft Overview of How it dominated the IT sector

Hello Comrades,

It's been a while...

Let's Goooo

story

Linux is an Operating System unanimously dominated the enterprise sector and slowly gaining popularity among consumer sector. Everyone love Linux for it's flexible CLI based approach and the way it integrates with the system configuration. The Linux OS is the only one which have a proper system administrator tools, thanks to it's open community.

Linux is not a complete Operating system, it's just a Kernel

PROLOGUE

The year was 1991, as Internet bubble started Finnish software engineer Linus Torvalds was messing around "The Internet" and made his own softwares in his leisure time. Well, he doesn't know that 30 years later also this project he accidentally created would rule the world of IT that time. He made his own version of the kernel from Unix and called it the infamous Linux and release on August 25 1991. That day marked the beginning of Linux and it gained popularity gradually among the Unix community as it was free.

Operating System in a nutshell

The OS plays most important role in any computer related operations or activity, as it acts as a medium between Hardware of Input and Output devices. Without OS a consumer doesn't have a use of any hardware devices which were connected. OS have different layers and it differs based on the proprietary company who owns it, but predominantly these layers are same

As they are:

  • Input device
  • Processing Unit
  • Output device
  • Kernel (Core program which ensures the interaction between hardware and software components.)
  • Shell (Mode of interaction with the system)
  • Application (Any application which reside on the disk and based on user's needs)

There are different Operating systems from different vendors who promise "They are the best", well that's a debatable argument for different place. Each vendor specfic OS has their own pros and cons which creates a biased fanbase for it. Famous OS which dominates the world of computers for consumer grade are as follows

  • Microsoft's Windows (30% market share)
  • Google's Android (42% market share)
  • Apple's MacOS (7%)
  • Apple's iOS (16%)
  • Linux (1%)

Well, when it comes to enterprise and server level Linux dominates the market with it's insane usage and functionality of it. The linux OS have an added advantage of being open-source as they created plethora of companies as predominantly they forked and made their own version of it. The stats of worldwide server operating environments as follows

  • Linux (70% Includes subscription support)
  • Windows (29.7% Includes license and support)
  • Other (0.3%)

Linux Flavors - Choice is yours

The Linux is open-source project which means anyone can create their own version of it for their own personal use or release it to the public and provide required support if there is issue with the OS. There are so many OS influenced from linux like Android which is the most used OS in the world and some OS have the core elements of Linux and create their own spin-off of it. The famous Flavors of Linux are as follows,

  • RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
  • Ubuntu
  • SUSE Linux
  • Debian GNU/Linux
  • Fedora OS
  • Arch Linux (My favourite <3)
  • CentOS
  • And the list goes on

Core Profession of Systems Engineer - The Unsung Hero

As a Systems Engineer myself, we are the people behind the scenes who make sure the system runs as expected and the product can be delivered to the consumer on time. The day-to-day job of Sysadmin varies as per the requirement and the severity of the issue. We support each system 24x7 and it must be maintained in a scheduled time to ensure it behave responsively.

The basic components Linux and general sysadmins work as follows

  • User Management (It depends on the companies count and it can even become complex as per the requirement)
  • Disk Management (Core component as every data resides on any disk must be managed carefully to avoid catastrophe like data loss)
  • Process Management (Ensure the core elements of the OS process works as expected)
  • H/W failure (Troubleshooting the hardware failure at the console or physically at Datacenter)
  • Automate repetitive tasks (Automatic the repetitive tasks to reduce time and the H/W utilization)

Contribution of Linux in cloud - Colossal titan than it's counterparts

The Linux OS contribution in the cloud space is commandable as it created a necessity to learn Linux in the first place in recent years. The ease of installation and configuration of any Linux flavor is much appreciated and the amount of hardware usage is way too less than it's rival. The Cloud is pay-per-use concept which needed an OS which can handle the threshold and also perform accordingly, Linux flavors are the ones which can satisfy the needs. When it comes to cloud requirements nothing can come near Linux Flavors (RHEL as most companies prefer for their exceptional support and integrity). There is a lot of traction towards cloud in recent times and they are the future which would change the conventional usage of current enterprise drastically.

EPILOGUE

The world of IT can be so huge and the way all the components and features are bounded together to serve the needs of the end consumer is immensely powerful also creates a way of culture among the demand. Linux plays a huge role in the expansion of IT and it still amazes us with new feature it offers cosmically, Kindly learn basics of linux which would be useful at anytime for your career.

Thanks for reading the article if you read it till the end!!

Happy Learning!!!
